In 1920, a group of local businessmen in the City of Petersburg decided to form a golf and country club. The group solicited the talents of Donald Ross to design the original 9-hole layout. The Country Club of Petersburg opened in 1921 to rave reviews. The club continued to thrive for many years in that capacity, even during the Great Depression.
In the mid-1960's, the Board of Directors decided to explore expanding the club to 18 holes. Because of land restrictions around the existing property, they decided to purchase property a few miles south of the original course in Prince George County. On this property, where the club still stands, a modern course was built by Ed Ault and completed in 1969. Measuring over 7000 yards, it was one of the longest courses anywhere in the area at that time. A few years later it was decided to build a clubhouse and move all club operations to the new location.
In 1997 noted architect Lester George was hired to rebuild all the green complexes. The Country Club of Petersburg continues to boast some of the best greens in Central Virginia. More significant improvements came in 2005 with a major clubhouse renovation project. This included an expansive new kitchen, new locker rooms, a new fitness center, and a new sports bar. This has truly made the Country Club of Petersburg the place to be! The club has hosted many local and regional tournaments, such as the State Open of Virginia, the State Amateur of Virginia, the Eastern Regional National Club Professional Championship, AJGA events, and many other noted professional, amateur and junior events.
In 2021 the club celebrated its Centennial, and the members are excited to be part of a club with such a wonderful history.
